Albino

A foot-long albino ratfish was caught during a University of Washington research project off Whidbey Island. From the Eurekalert:

"'Ratfish usually hang out in places with soft, muddy bottoms,' says Jon Reum, the aquatic and fishery sciences doctoral student who found the albino ratfish during a UW research project. 'The typical ratfish in Puget Sound is brown or black with a smattering of white spots so it blends in with the sediments.'
"This fish was almost pure white with a crystalline layer near the surface of its skin that gave it a silvery sheen." ...

"After the albino ratfish was caught the researchers attempted to keep her alive in a bucket of water but, in spite of boards placed over the top, she managed to flip out of the bucket onto the deck during the night. She is now preserved and part of the UW Fish Collection, which has 82 other ratfish specimens, ranging from eggs to full-grown adults. The collection, which focuses on North Pacific and Bering Sea fishes, is needed by researchers on and off campus to identify species and to understand fish biology and conservation."

Albino Nurse Shark

An albino grey nurse shark was photographed off Australia's Fish Rock in New South Wales. It was a 2.2 meter male. From the news:

"Despite albinos having a lower chance of survival because they are visible to prey, Mr Cragg said this shark was 'fighting fit'.
"'It looks like an active male and it was hanging out with the other sharks quite peacefully,' he said. " ...

"The sighting comes as South West Rocks residents wait to hear if Fish Rock will become a 'no-fishing' zone.
"The Nature Conservation Council (NCC) is pushing for more exclusion zones in NSW such as Fish Rock on the grounds the grey nurse shark species is nearly extinct, with fewer than 500 on the east coast. However, there is anecdotal evidence to suggest up to 6000 grey nurses are out there."

Albino Capra Ibex

A young albino capra ibex was photographed by rangers in the northern Italian Alps. From the news:

"Rangers took photos of the albino capra ibex climbing with its mother Sunday at about 10,000 feet above the Les Laures valley in the northwestern Val d'Aosta region, said Christian Chioso, a regional wildlife official." ...
"Chioso estimated the albino animal is about a year old.
"Hikers had been reporting seeing a white animal at higher elevations for months, and forest rangers have been keeping a lookout, Chioso said.
"The goat was seen near the boundaries of the Big Paradise National Park, which was established to protect the species. Chiaso said about 4,000 wild mountain goats populate the park."
