Bigfoot in Georgia

The publisher recently sent me a copy of Jeffery Wells' Bigfoot in Georgia, so I'll note a few things here for potential readers. First the basics:

Bigfoot in Georgia
Jeffery Wells
Pine Winds Press (Idyll Arbor); 2010
ISBN 978-0-937663-17-2
165 pp., retails for $18.00

Let me start off pointing out that Amazon currently has the book discounted (on pre-order) to a bit over $12, so don't be afraid of the $18 price tag.

The book covers Bigfoot sightings in Georgia, including regional Native American tales, some early newspaper accounts, and other stories up to the present day. There is discussion in the first chapter on the overall history of Bigfoot sightings, another chapter discusses the Elkins Creek cast, and he devotes a fair bit of text to specific organizations or researchers (for example, a chapter on journalist Wayne Ford).

The author is a professor at Georgia Military College (Atlanta campus), and his ability to write is certainly above par for the subject. This is a decent state guide on the topic, and the author handles it objectively. It looks like most of the reports come from other researchers and organizations, so the scope of sightings may be familiar to the more well-versed Bigfoot enthusiasts. That's not a bad thing -- if anything, more regional Bigfoot organizations need to seek out individuals like Wells to organize and write up their files in a professional manner. Too many guides (or websites) are haphazard or don't convey an objective approach to the subject. I would have liked to have seen a more thorough survey of sightings in this book, but I suspect it would be too difficult to manage that while dealing with the various personalities in Bigfoot research. That's one reason I don't bother with this topic much myself.

There's a whole slew of low-budget Bigfoot-related (mostly horror) flicks coming out. One, Nightbeasts, stars Zach Galligan of Gremlins fame. Trailer can be seen at this site. Plot looks like it might be a bit light and the brief glimpses of costume apes aren't particularly noteworthy, but the cinematography (as the site notes) looks far better than seen in most sasquatch flicks.

I really do think it's possible to put together a Bigfoot film with good suspense, an interesting plot, and depth of characters, (not to mention the chance to include some gorgeous backwoods scenery), but for some reason, most of these pics are in it for the cheap thrills.

Anatomy of a Beast: Obsession and Myth on the Trail of Bigfoot
Michael McLeod

April 2009

University of California Press

"Part history, part road trip, and part biography, this is the true story of a remarkable group of men whose obsession with Bigfoot turned the giant hominid into an American icon. Award-winning journalist Michael McLeod tells of Bigfoot's rise to tabloid stardom in a fast-paced account that begins with his own journey to investigate a famous 1967 film clip of a Bigfoot in a California forest. McLeod proceeds to uncover a trail of clues reaching from the late nineteenth century, when a few ambitious, imaginative naturalists and explorers synthesized historical and indigenous folklore with Darwinian ideas and speculated that a proto-hominid 'missing link' might still be alive in remote areas. That speculation would eventually inspire a colorful cast of loggers, hunters, con artists, and businessmen in the twentieth century to create the modern myth of Bigfoot, all of them angling for a piece of a monster that the media and the public still can't get enough of. Told through vividly narrated interviews and anecdotes,
Anatomy of a Beast offers a unique perspective on the deep roots of counterfactual thinking—and how obsession and myth are created out of it."

Wisconsin Bigfoot Rumors

Nothing substantial, but rumors are flying in Sawyer Co., Wisconsin, of a large ape-like creature. (News source.)

"According to another reported sighting obtained by the Record, a Wausau man, who wishes to remain unnamed, and his nephew were snowmobiling on a trail just southwest of Seeley when they saw something unusual cross the trail.

"'I don’t know what I saw, but my nephew and I both saw something very real,' he said. 'We only saw legs from the hips down as it was caught in the headlights of our snowmobiles. It stepped out of the woods, walking upright, and stepped across the trail right in front of my nephew who was ahead of me 20-30 feet.
"'The legs were long (and) covered with long dark hair,' he continued. 'My first thought was it was a drunk walking through the woods after leaving the Sawmill Saloon, but that makes no sense. We were quite a ways west of the Sawmill and there is no trail or crossing anywhere near there for someone to be walking.'
"After gunning their snowmobiles past, the two turned around to explore the area and find tracks. But they had not marked the spot with a landmark and were unsuccessful at finding any sign when they returned to the area."

Early Pennsylvania Bigfoot

For those who have picked up a copy of The Historical Bigfoot, add a note. The latest issue of Daniel Perez's Bigfoot Times has an interesting account from an 81-year old Pennsylvania woman who relates a couple of incidents involving a large hairy apelike creature when she was young (circa 1936), that she now thinks may have been a Bigfoot. She grew up on a farm in Fayette County. Pennsylvania, of course, has a fair number of early Bigfoot-like accounts. Along with those noted in HB, I have further details on a lengthy central Pennsylvania flap in the 1920s in Cryptozoology: Science & Speculation. Perez's newsletter is interesting, worth a subscription (available here).

NM BF Film

Two men visiting New Mexico inadvertently filmed what they believe may be a Bigfoot. From the news:

"Lindsay Lemmon and Austin McGee said after returning from a trip out west, they found that video shot out the window along I-40 in New Mexico has a glimpse of what appears to be a hulking furry figure walking.
"Mr. Lemmon, a local contractor who specializes in historic homes, said, 'I'm still skeptical, but it does look like a figure to me. If it was a prank, then it was awfully hot and it was out in the middle of nowhere.'
"Mr. McGee, who shot the footage, is much more positive. He said, 'I believe it whole-heartedly. Every time I look at it on the VCR I see a figure with real long arms hanging below the knees. He is walking and swinging those arms.'" ...
"Mr. Lemmon said they plan to release the video after the copyright is in place.
"He said they do not want to release the exact location in New Mexico, though they believe they can pinpoint it from a town sign that is earlier in the video."

Some People Like a Good Story

From a news column on tale-tellers (who do appear in the odd investigation):

"Junior Jones could tell a good story.

"Co-workers would get annoyed and go fill the beer cooler.
"I'd listen to Junior tell tales.
"Later, I learned that Junior was the one who created a minor media frenzy a few years earlier when he reported seeing Bigfoot in the woods near Dansville.
"He got the cops involved and the newspapers wrote about him and TV crews interviewed him.
"Soon, others piped up to say that, indeed, they'd seen it too.
"What a character."

"'A couple of our members attended and ended up finding the sasquatch.'
"The creature turned out to be an 18-year-old Winnipeg man wearing a hairy gorilla mask, which Reitlo described as 'ugly' and 'scary.' ...

"Reitlo said the man was not intoxicated when nabbed by officers; he apparently had been camping in the area over the past two summers and simply enjoyed the prank."

Bader, Moneymaker and Beckjord - Upper Peninsula Letters to the Editor

Most people who read this type of entry are all to familiar with the internal bickering and name-saying that goes on in Bigfoot and related studies.

Most are also familiar with the BFRO (Bigfoot Field Researchers Organization) and their work and expeditions, including the one from July 12-15, 2007 in Michigans Upper Peninsula. It has been in the news, and mentioned at various Internet locations.

On July 3, 2007 a Paul Bader had a letter to the editor of the Daily Press posted. Entitled There's no bigfoot in the U.P. . Within this editorial letter, Bader explains his background and briefly why he feels no Bigfoot exists in the Upper Peninsula. He concludes his letter with the following:

I feel Matthew Moneymakers’ search for bigfoot in the U.P. is a folly. The real people to ask about bigfoot are the lumberjacks and the foresters, as they are in the woods a lot and know the difference between a bear and bigfoot or any other animal.

If there were bigfoot in the U.P., I would have found a track or some sort of evidence during that time as I have walked many miles of muddy and dry logging roads of all sorts, new and old ones, or would have heard from other foresters of a bigfoot sighting or track.

Mathew Moneymaker in response has a letter to the editor published on July 7, 2007. His letter, Why bigfoot hasn't been seen offers a challenge to Bader as follows:

My questions to Mr. Paul Bader: How many times has he explored the U.P. woods at night? Has he seen at least one specimen of every mammal species that is known to live in the U.P.?

This is all well and good. Freedom of speech, freedom to speak ones mind and challenge others to express or follow-up on their viewpoints.

Also on July 7, 2007 Erik Beckjord had a response letter printed as well. Beckjord's letter, Bigfoot, elusive, is still here touched on the non-flesh and blood mindset within some Bigfooters. Beckjord states at the letter start the following:

It is our experience at the National Cryptozoological Society that a special type of bigfoot exists in Michigan, either upper or lower, but it is more of a space-time creature, ala Einstein and parallel universes, rather than a trappable being.

Bigfooters attack each other, there is a sense of ownership to the work to the methodologies and to the collected reports. The theories bounce around, and holy grails are held to a flame ala the Patterson-Gimlin Film (read Darren Naish's well put together entry Frame 352, and all that at Tetrapod Zoology).

It is good, in a sense, to see newspapers (even if they may not all be paper based now) use the age old method of letters to the editors to demonstrate civic debate. It may not be the most common public debate, but none-the-less the venue is beneficial and it reaches an audience.

We have, therefore, in three (3) small letters to a regional press, the context of Bigfoot and his kingdom. The skeptic, the challenger and the non-mainstream challenger. Who is correct?

More on India's "Bigfoot"

An interesting supplement to the initial news article about the ape-like creature reported in India: (News source.)

"One local farmer, 40-year-old Wallen Sangma, claimed he had seen an entire family of the creatures - possibly a lowland relative of the Himalayan Yeti, or perhaps a distant cousin of the North American bigfoot known as Sasquatch, or Australia’s Yowie.
"'The sight was frightening: two adults and two smaller ones, huge and bulky, furry,' he told an AFP reporter who visited the remote area on Thursday and Friday.
"'Their heads looked as if they were wearing caps, and their colour was blackish-brown,' he said, adding that the four 'monsters' were about 30 to 40 metres away from him as he looked for firewood in a forest area.
"'The four of them quietly vanished into the undergrowth,' he said of the recent sighting."

Man Attacked in Minnesota

Man attacked in the woods, clawed strangely by a mysterious beast…. Like the opening to a B-movie, but this time it happened in Itasca State Park in Minnesota.

On Thursday, May 24th, 2007 Jon Kenning, an assistant professor of biology at Creighton University (Omaha, Nebraska) was left with 2-inch lacerations on his head and torso after an early morning attack inside his tent.

Kenning never saw the animal, so speculation can be rampant as to the cause, from a bear to a fisher, and the latest suspect a Bobcat. And yes, we knew it would arise, even Bigfoot has fallen in the trap.

While Kenning will recover from his attack, it should be remindful of all researchers, hikers and campers to be aware that they are in nature and that even in a tent danger can lurk. This should not inhibit people, but be just a bit of warning.

Now, on the facet of Bigfoot and this attack. That is a story for another time, as it is a continuation of a pattern of quick reactions when an “unknown animal” is reported in the news. Reminiscent of the “mystery foot” for a while back found and other oddities of the woods.

Canadian Sasquatch Sighting

News from the Edmonton Sun about a possible Sasquatch encounter (apparently in late 2006?):

"A Cranbrook resident says he was just beginning his early-morning shift as a sand truck/snowplow driver for a highways maintenance contractor when he saw what he now calls 'the beast.'
"Gord Johnson says he was barely out of the Cranbrook city limits, heading west, when his headlights illuminated what he thought was a human figure some 150 metres away.
"'It was standing in the ditch on the right side of the road, sort of bent over. It was dark and cold and too early in the morning for anybody to be out picking bottles or something, so I thought whoever it was might be hurt or sick, so I slowed down.'
"As Johnson drew nearer, the figure in the ditch straightened, then turned and began to move towards his truck while remaining in the ditch.
"As the distance closed the snowplough driver was now better able to see that this individual was oddly shaped; very large with arms that reached nearly to its knees, a conical head and what he had initially thought to be a light golden brown parka was instead hair.
"The two-metre-plus figure walking towards him was covered in it, he says.
"Johnson’s truck slowly passed the creature, allowing him to see it clearly through the passenger side window." ...
"Nearly three months later, on Jan. 25, Johnson was again maintaining a road in the early morning when his truck ran out of sand. Finding a wide spot in the road he began turning his truck around so he could head back for another load to finish the job.
"While backing up, he noticed a set of strange tracks in the newly fallen snow and decided to get out and investigate.
"'As soon as I saw them I could tell they were made by something walking on only two legs — kind of offset. Right away my gut told me something wasn’t right. I took a couple shots with the disposable camera that I started carrying since the October incident.'
"Johnson finished his shift, then wanting to show Carter what he considered possible proof of his previous encounter with a strange biped, returned to the spot with a better camera.
"The pair then re-photographed the tracks, measured the distance between them (about 1.8 metres), and then followed them a short distance until they disappeared into dense brush.
With the light failing and the possibility that whatever had made the tracks might still be in the vicinity, the pair decided not to follow the mystery beast’s trail any further."

An Early April Fool's Wild Man

Loren Coleman has posted an account at Cryptomundo of an early April Fool's Day Sasquatch story by John Green (before Green became interested in the phenomenon). That may have been one of the first news pranks that actually used the term Sasquatch, but there is a much earlier April 1st tale of a hairy wild man. I included this in The Historical Bigfoot:

"What Is It?
"A Question That is Agitating the People of Auglaize Township.
Capture of a Creature Half Man, Half Beast
Sets the Whole Township Wild With Excitement
Nothing Like It Ever Seen Or Heard Of Before
A Correct History of the Whole Affair

"The greatest excitement prevails in the southern part of Auglaize Township.
"A capture was made yesterday that has taken a heavy burden from the minds of the farmers of that region.
"Fond mothers are hugging their children closer to their bosoms as they reflect in a frightened manner on what might have been.
"Word was received at this office yesterday afternoon by special messenger of the capture, near the village of West Newton, of a frightful creature that was neither man nor beast.
"A representative of the Times left at once for the scene of the capture, returning with Mr. Perry, a farmer. From him it was learned that for some time there have been all manner of depredations going on in that section of the township lying on the northern slope of what is known there as the Backbone. At first they were scarcely noticeable and the occasional absence of a pig or a sheep from some farmer’s flock was attributed to accidents or to dogs.
"These mysterious disappearances were first noticed over a year ago, but they were given little thought till in the past few months when they became so common as to create alarm. Instead of an occasional death, it became a general slaughter. A farmer would awaken in the morning to find every pig in his possession lying dead with its neck broken or half his flock of sheep dead.
"They became half crazed with their fear and losses continued. They never knew when they closed up their sheds for the night how they would find things in the morning. Investigations were made and mass meetings held to compare notes to try and get a clew to the perpetrator of the outrage. The farmers were completely mystified and the fact that no noise was ever heard, no trace left, led them to fear it was a visitation of Divine Providence.
"Strange as it may seem it was decided at their first meeting to hold secret sessions and not mention their peculiar misfortunes till the mystery had been cleared up or they found there was no hope of doing so. For this reason the matter has never before reached the public through the press.
"About the first of March, Mr. H. C. Lemmon was wakened from his slumbers by a violent disturbance in his barn. Hastily dressing himself, he ran out to ascertain the cause. Opening the door he saw by the rays of light from his lantern a sight that made his blood run cold. Struggling in the last throes of death were his two fine horses. Carefully examining them he found that each had its neck broken.
"At the first break of day, he spread the news among his fellow farmers and it struck terror to their hearts. Were their teams and cattle to suffer the same fate as their smaller stock? A close vigil was set and for a time all was quiet.
"Last week, however, the mischief began again, but a clew was gained that led to yesterday’s capture. Two young men were returning home late last Sunday evening and while passing a barn that stood along side the Bellfontaine road on which they were traveling, they saw what looked to be a giant man coming out of the building. They quietly hid in a corner of the fence and watched. Instantly the thought flashed through their minds that they had fathomed the great mystery. And they had. By the moonlight, they were able to get a good view of the destructive monster as he passed near them.
"The alarm was given as soon as the thing had passed out of hearing, and in an hour after the discovery fifty men, some on foot and others on horseback, were on the trail. It was the opinion of the young men that they were hunting a ferocious animal, and when about noon yesterday his capture was effected, their surmise proved to be correct.
"The party had completely lost the trail and were about to give up in disgust when someone noticed a small opening in the hillside under the roots of a bushy tree that stood just to the right of the party. Monster foot steps led to it. There was no need to look further. Here was their game, but how to get it? All sorts of suggestions were offered, but none were practicable. No one was brave enough to enter.
"It was at last decided to smoke the creature out. First a rope was secured and a noose so arranged that the moment it came out, the rope could be pulled taut about his body. A fire was then built near the opening and the wind being favorable, the smoke soon began in pouring in in great clouds into the cave.
"Not long did they have to wait. Dan Cook, one of the young men who had seen the creature on Sunday evening, held the rope, suddenly the head and sholders of the creature peered out of the opening, and gasping and choking, it made a dash for liberty. A quick pull of the rope tightened the noose, and in a trice it was landed with its arms pinioned to its side, right in the midst of the party. The struggle and bellowing of the maddened being were said to be frightful and it is doubtful if had its arms been free it could have been held. It was finally bound tightly round and round from head to foot, and carried to a strong room in West Newton where it was viewed last night by the reporter. It haad the form of a man, but is covered from head to foot with hair that is coarse and matted. Its nails are long and sharp, while its muscles are like iron. The teeth are big and yellow and the mouth has a horrid appearance. The eyes are black and fierce, and altogether the huge captive is a ferocious looking object. The only sound he has muttered, for it is evidently a man, since his capture, has been an occasional groan. He eyes everyone fiercely that comes within the range of his vision, and seems to be entirely bereft of reason.
"The society that was organized to effect his capture, have him in care and are charging an admission of twenty-five cents to see the monster. People are flocking in from all points to which the news has spread and it begins to look as if the proceeds of admission would be sufficient to repay the members for their losses, that being the object of the society.
"The excitement is so great at present over the almost incredible circumstances of the capture of the wild man and his character that no one seems to know what will be done with him in the future.
"It is possible he may be placed on exhibition in Lima and an effort will probably be made to dispose of him to some showman.
"Medical attention will also be directed to this freak of nature, and an effort made to diagnose his case.
"It is the opinion of the Times that in his capture Allen county has produced one of the greatest freaks the world has ever known.
"[This being April first, all fools day, the above article will be appreciated.]"

Is Bigfoot Living In The Forest Above Marysville?

Note: See for the video segment

There's a big mystery in our backyard tonight. Is a Bigfoot living in the forest above Marysville?

A local couple has found big prints in those woods and experts are saying it may not be a hoax.

It was just after a rainstorm, a great time for hunting deer. It was a perfect place, high up in the dense woods of the Plumas National Forest.Chuck and Michelle Padigo had been down the logging road lots of times, including just a few days earlier.

Past two gates, about three miles from the highway, in a recently logged area, Michelle looked down and spotted something very strange. What the Padigo's say they encountered was more than three dozen huge footprints spread out over a hundred yards or more.

“I swear the hair on my arms stood up,” says Michelle. The couple recorded their discovery with photographs and returned to take more pictures.

Joining the Padigos now was Scot Woodland, a Nevada County search and rescue team member and a certified expert tracker.

Scot says he's got an open mind but when he first saw the tracks he figured here's another hoax."The closer I got and looked at the prints, the more I could see the detail and the movement in the foot. As a tracker you see how things move the weight and all that stuff. The complexity of the footprint made me go whoa!” he says.

What really impressed Scot was the force of the Bigfoot print which rippled the ground around it. Scot's footprint next to it hardly moved the earth.“If it's a hoax, somebody really did a good job, if it's not, then there's a big creature that lives among us," says Woodland.

All the prints appear to be from one animal walking slowly but with a stride twice that of a human.“We measured from heel of the left foot to heel of left foot, 56 inches," says Scott.

The footprint was gigantic. It was seven-and-a-half inches wide. The tape measure shows the impression is nearly double the length of an adult human foot. In Humboldt County, in the tiny town of Willow Creek, there's a Bigfoot museum run by Al Hodgson. Decades ago, he had a similar experience when he found what he believed were the footprints of a mother and child Bigfoot.Ever since the scratchy film of an alleged Bigfoot spotting was taken in 1963, a growing amount of potential evidence has been reported.

From a distant picture of a possible big foot, to plaster impressions of some very big feet. Compare them with the plaster cast Chuck Padigo made and you’ll see the same basic shape, same size. Almost square toes with little or no arching.

If there is a big foot living in the woods, it wouldn't be the first time somebody has reported the evidence. CBS13 checked the records over the past decade. In both 1997 and 1998, a science researcher found possible Bigfoot tracks and feces in the same Plumas Forest Area. And again in 1998, a veteran forest service employee found footprints fourteen inches long by six inches wide.CBS13 checked with residents of the small towns near where Michelle and Chuck found their footprints.

Store owner Peggy Pope says she's a believer.“I've never heard of anybody up here saying they've seen one, or any evidence? Or any evidence, but I believe there is such a thing," says Pope.Other locals say they have either heard or smelled what might be a Bigfoot, but they also tell of some big bears living in these woods. But pictures of bear paws, while certainly very large, clearly show big claws.

The footprints Chuck and Michelle found show no sign of any claws, just clean imprints of five toes. The Padigos found the footprints four months ago and didn't publicize it until now. They do not seem to seek notoriety and appear to be genuinely and deeply affected by the incident but still, we had to ask if they were playing a hoax on us. “No sir, I wouldn't do that, I'm not that smart, I couldn't make something like that," says Chuck.

Photos and measurements of those big footprints have been sent to a renowned scientist who is researching Bigfoot sightings. No word yet on whether he thinks those prints are made by man or by a lot bigger and more secretive creature.

More on the Virginian Foot Mystery

Earlier it was noted that an odd "foot" had been discovered in Virginia. Here then is more information on the continuing investigation by locals.

Foot 'looks like bear's hind paw'

FREDERICKSBURG -- The apelike foot found in a Spotsylvania County landfill still has folks scratching their heads.

Spotsylvania Sheriff Howard Smith said yesterday that he plans to send the foot to an as-yet-undetermined expert for further examination. "So we can find out what it is," he said.
Already, word of the find is making the rounds on Internet sites dedicated to Bigfoot sightings and theories.

William M. Dranginis, who operates the Virginia Bigfoot Research Organization, has offered to have DNA samples, if he can obtain them, tested by experts, including renowned primatologist Jane Goodall. Dranginis said he has already made arrangements with Goodall in case an unidentified creature is ever found.

"You prepare for this," he said in a phone interview yesterday.

Goodall has said she is certain Bigfoot creatures exist in nature.

"Dr. Goodall is curious and keeps an open mind on the subject," Nona Gandelman, a spokeswoman for the Jane Goodall Institute in Arlington, said yesterday, adding that Goodall was traveling and not immediately available for comment.

Dranginis, who has viewed photographs of the foot found in Spotsylvania, said it resembles a bear's skinned hind paw. Authorities say the foot, which appeared sawed off above the ankle, is about 8 inches long.

"That would be relatively small even for an adolescent Bigfoot," said Dranginis, who has been on a quest since spotting what he described as a Bigfoot creature in Culpeper County in 1995.
"There's big bucks in bear poaching," said the 48-year-old Manassas man. In Virginia, bear-hunting season runs for specified periods from mid-October to early January, depending on the locality and the weapon to be used.

Authorities initially thought the foot might belong to a human and that it might be evidence of a homicide. Workers found the appendage Saturday afternoon in the treaded tracks of a bulldozer used to move garbage at one of the county's landfills.

Three dozen searchers -- sheriff's deputies and volunteers from the fire and rescue departments -- sifted through half of a 127-ton load of fresh garbage looking for more body parts.

Authorities halted the search Monday morning after receiving word that the state medical examiner's office in Richmond determined the foot belonged to an apelike species, based on the bone structure revealed through X-rays. At the time, the sheriff said he considered the case pretty much closed unless someone came forward with information.

Yesterday, Smith said he plans to send the foot for testing after it is returned from the medical examiner's office. Arkuie Williams, a spokesman for the medical examiner's office, said officials there are still doing further investigation. He would not say what tests are being performed but reiterated, "It's not human."

Authorities now say that the foot found at a Spotsylvania County landfill is not human, but it's unclear exactly what species it is.

The Virginia medical examiner's office X-rayed the left foot found Saturday at the Livingston Landfill and determined that the 8-inch foot was that of an "apelike species," said Spotsylvania Sheriff Howard Smith.

The medical examiner's office reported those findings early yesterday morning, ending search efforts at the Massey Road landfill. About 35 Spotsylvania fire, rescue and sheriff's personnel were at the site sifting through 127 tons of trash to find more of the body.

That search began Sunday after the foot was found by landfill workers cleaning the treads of a bulldozer used to spread and cover garbage.

The foot appeared to have been cleanly sawed off and resembled that of a human, Smith said. An employee with the Virginia medical examiner's concurred, and the foot was sent to Richmond for forensic testing.

The Free Lance-Star sent photos of the foot to several people who study primates. All disagreed with the state medical examiner's office's conclusions.

Experts at the University of Wisconsin-Madison said it looks more like a human foot than that of an apelike species, according to Jordana Lenon, a spokeswoman for the primate center on campus. She said it's difficult to tell without handling it. A colleague of Lenon's said it looked like the skinned-out hind-foot of a bear.

April D. Truitt of the Primate Rescue Center in Kentucky, also said the foot looks more human. She said it's too big to be a monkey; it's more the size of a gorilla, chimpanzee, bonobo or orangutan. She said its bone structure leaves the chimp as the only possibility.

"This certainly doesn't resemble the foot of any chimp I've ever met, and I've encountered hundreds in the past two decades," Truitt added.

William Dranginis of Manassas has a more unusual opinion--he believes the foot could be that of Bigfoot. He heads the Virginia Bigfoot Research Organization and has been passionately studying the elusive creature for more than 10 years.

It's also unclear how the foot got to the landfill. Theories have included that it was dumped by a hunter, a taxidermist or a traveling animal exhibitor putting on shows for a fee.

Sheriff Smith said his office's investigation essentially ended when they were told it wasn't a human foot. But he noted that it's against county law to have a pet primate or to dump animal carcasses. It also could be an animal cruelty case.

Mary Beth Sweetland, director of research and investigations at PETA in Norfolk, said she hopes there is further investigation.

"But cruelty-to-animal cases often are given short shrift," Sweetland said.

Smith said his office will open the investigation if someone comes forward with more information. For now, he's thankful the foot isn't that of a human.

"The good news is that we don't have a homicide," he said.

High Technology Bigfoot Expedition - Biscardi

Dates: March 28, 2007-March 31st, 2007

Location: In a swampy area that looks prehistoric, in the vicinity of Paris, Texas

Expedition: to be conducted by The Granite State Paranormal Society, Contact Jim Snell,
New Hampshire: 646-652-6529 for info

Expedition: to be led by Bigfoot Explorer, C. Thomas Biscardi and his Searching

For Bigfoot Team
For additional information: Robert Barrows, R.M. Barrows, Inc. Advertising and Public Relations, Burlingame, California
Tel: 650-344-1951

Despite countless "Bigfoot" sightings all over the globe, no one has ever captured the creature popularly known as Bigfoot.

Now, a New Hampshire company, The Granite State Paranormal Society, an organization that investigates the paranormal, has put together a team of scientists that have developed very special technologies that will be used in a Bigfoot Expedition that will take place in a swampy area that looks prehistoric, in the vicinity of Paris, Texas from March 28th to March 31st, 2007.
Bigfoot explorer C. Thomas Biscardi, Founder of Searching For, headquartered in Menlo Park, California will lead the expedition.

The expedition will be open to the public and journalists on a fee basis. The Granite State Paranormal Society will handle reservations and expedition details.

Searching For Bigfoot, Inc., in association with Big Cat Productions, plans to develop a new reality TV series, "Capturing Bigfoot," based on Searching for Bigfoot, Inc.’s latest expeditions to find and bring "Bigfoot" home alive. This new series, which will feature cutting-edge high technology equipment designed to locate, capture and contain Bigfoot, will be produced, directed and written by Ron Lyon and Jenny Paschall, whose collective creative credits include ABC-TV’s "Ripley’s Believe It or Not," Discovery Channel’s "Would You Believe It!!" as well as Travel Channel’s "Most Haunted in America" and "Strangest Remains". (For more information, go to

"Capturing Bigfoot" will be a co-production with Searching for Bigfoot, Inc., headed up by Tom Biscardi, founder of Searching for Bigfoot, Inc., in Menlo Park, California, (

Biscardi will be joined on the expedition by his search team, as well as leading academics and amateur participants who believe they can handle the challenge.
The television series will be based on the upcoming March 28th expedition and a series of future Bigfoot expeditions currently being planned around known Bigfoot migration routes. Bigfoot is a migratory creature" according to Biscardi, "so whether we capture one on the Paris, Texas expedition or not, they will continue to seek out additional creatures to find out more about them."

"The key to capturing a Bigfoot is knowing where to look and how to catch one," according to Biscardi, "and after all our expeditions over the past two years," we think we know where the best places are to look for one, and now we have this new technology that will help us locate, capture and contain this elusive creature!"

DVD: Harry and the Hendersons

If nothing else, it was a significant cultural milestone in public perception of cryptozoology. Harry and the Hendersons is soon to be released on a special edition DVD here in North America. From

"If you've never seen 'Harry,' the premise is simple: The Henderson family has an unfortunate vehicular accident in which they think they've made road kill of a fabled Bigfoot. When the Hendersons take the creature home, they discover he's far from dead, and far from from the fierce beast that legend has made sasquatches out to be. From there on out, it's Bigfoot — or Harry, rather — in suburbia. Good natured comedy and thrills obviously follow.
"2007 marks the 20th anniversary for 'Harry and the Hendersons,' and the 10th year of the DVD format. And believe it or not, 'Harry' and DVD have never met in the United States. Until now.
"Universal Studios Home Entertainment will be releasing a Special Edition of 'Harry on the Hendersons' to DVD this April 24. For fans who have been waiting a decade to add this title to their Amblin collections, you'll be pleased to hear that the release will feature a number of previously unavailable special features.
"First, the film will be available in an anamorphic 1.85:1 picture, with a Dolby Digital 5.1 soundtrack to compliment (the film will also include subtitles in English SDH, French and Spanish). Bonus features will include an audio commentary by director William Dear" ...
"Also included are deleted scenes, a 'Harry...Finding the Missing Link' featurette, a 'Making of Harry and the Hendersons' documentary, plus a behind-the-scenes newswrap featurette and the film's theatrical trailer.
"If that's not enough, you can pre-order "Harry and the Hendersons" on DVD for a low $10.49 through"

Archaeologist digs for proof of Sasquatch

Archaeologist digs for proof of Sasquatch
Published: January 26, 2007

By Chris Bateman

BY DAY SHE'S the Stanislaus National Forest's archaeologist. With a master's degree in anthropology, she makes sure prehistoric Native American sites in the woods are protected. She's also the forest's liaison with the Me-Wuk tribe.

But it's what Kathy Strain does in her spare time that separates her from Forest Service colleagues.

She's a Bigfooter. A student of Sasquatch. A yearner for Yeti. A true believer.
"A strong case can be made that Bigfoot exists," said Strain, whose Jamestown-area home includes a room full of books, videos, cast footprints, notes and reports on the creature. "I've seen things I have no other explanation for."

Not only that, but she says Tuolumne County and the forest she works on are among the huge creature's favorite haunts. She has catalogued scores of eyewitness accounts, has discovered a Sasquatch "nest" near Twain Harte and swears she was once close enough to the creature that dirt was still falling from the sides of deep,14-inch footprints it left behind.

Earlier it was reported about the stolen Bigfoot artwork.

Well, BIGFOOT HAS BEEN FOUND. Only, his feet are missing!!!!

FROM THE Associated Press - January 26, 2006

An imposing, wood-carved Bigfoot statue stolen from outside a doctor's office has been recovered — minus its big feet.

An anonymous tip led police to the 400-pound sculpture beneath a pile of debris in a backyard about a block from where it was snatched Monday. Two people confessed and could face theft charges.

The likeness of the legendary ape-like creature of the Northwest used to stand 8 feet high, but its 16-inch-long feet had been sawed off at the ankles, leaving it 18 inches shorter.

"I'm glad we got him before they cut him anymore," said chiropractor Tom Payne, who had the statue made 5 1/2 years ago and planted at the foot of his secluded driveway as a landmark for patients. "We're relieved to have him back at the office."

The statue was recovered Thursday. The suspects, a man and a boy, offered no motive, police spokeswoman Stacy Flores said.

Bigfoot is back in place outside Payne's office in this small town between Seattle and Tacoma, and Payne plans to get him some new feet.
"I'm sure I can find a chain saw sculptor that might feel up to the task," he said.

New Mexico Sasquatch

Jerry Padilla passed along a news account he wrote for the Taos (NM) News, involving a Sasquatch sighting in northern Taos County. From the January 18, 2007, edition:

Interesting find becomes scary experience for Costilla man

By Jerry A. Padilla

The Taos News

"In the interest of protecting a fragile ecosystem and a potentially rare and misunderstood species, the exact location of the following experience is best not revealed. Suffice it to say, the unusual encounter occurred in a canyon of the Sangre de Cristo Mountains near the Colorado-New Mexico border in northern Taos County.

"Arturo 'Homie' Mart'nez, 67, of Costilla said he decided 'to tell The Taos News about my experience because many people I’ve shared the information with don’t seem to take me serious. However, many do, and they have encouraged me to come forward with my story.'
"Mart'nez, originally of Arroyo Hondo, has spent a lifetime in the mountains, canyons and wilds of Northern New Mexico and southern Colorado, and can identify all the native wildlife, plants and animals, whatever the season or conditions. Not long ago, he and a person he calls a 'super friend' had a frightening, but very interesting experience while scouting for elk in preparation for a hunt. His friend has chosen to remain anonymous. Mart'nez made personal notes about what happened in this mountain canyon area Sept. 27.
"'I, myself, and my friend set out to scout for game, but something weird happened.'
"He explained that earlier the first day, while scouting in stands of aspens within sight of the community of Amalia from up high, Mart'nez found an interesting, naturally formed piece of aspen tree that strongly resembled a human face. 'Nobody carved it, it grew that way and I decided to bring it back.'
"After leaving the object at home, Mart'nez and friend returned to another area several miles away from where they had been earlier in the day. This time, while driving on another fork of the rough road, they found many tops of aspen trees cleanly broken off that were strewn over the road.
"'We decided to investigate who was breaking the trees and throwing them on the road. I asked my friend, "Who would want to do this?"' Mart'nez explained, 'These were aspens ranging in size from 3 to 4 inches to 6 to 8 inches in diameter, cleanly broken about 13 to 15 feet up the trunk of the trees. There were no tracks of bear or elk, or human tracks — no tracks of any kind, no sawdust at the bottom of the trees and what was strange, it was as if they were thrown several feet away from where they were broken. There were two big aspens completely uprooted and thrown away from where they had been growing. If bears had broken them, they would have left claw marks. Bears leave a smell on trees they scratch or break.'
"'Elk in rutting battles leave the ground very disturbed. It wasn’t, and seeing many broken trees we continued on to investigate who or what was breaking them. The broken tree tops were lying in the road as if something or someone wanted to say, "Nobody is welcome here." Rounding a curve, my tire blew out and things started getting very scary,' he continued.
"'We could hear elk bugling up higher and we decided to walk back down since it was late afternoon,' Mart'nez said. 'We needed to get a spare, and come back to change the tire. We were taking our time checking out more bro-ken trees, and there was easily over a 100 broken the same way. That’s when I heard the scariest noise I have ever heard in my life.
"'It started at first, sounding like an elk bugling, then turned into a scary roar so loud it kept echoing through the canyon,' he continued. 'The elk up high stopped bugling. It kept making that noise at us, it reminded me of the noise the devil made in "The Exorcist" movie. Whatever was making the noise started breaking trees and throwing them in our direction a few seconds later.
"'Then I saw a huge creature moving through the edge of an aspen grove, about 30 to 40 feet from me. It walked upright, but hunched over, maybe 6 feet tall bent over, and standing straight was 7 to 8 feet tall with very dark fur all over. It was not a bear. Bears don’t walk like humans. I am convinced I saw what many call Sasquatch. Even with my gun, I was very scared and we left in a hurry. It seemed to be following in the edge of the trees, breaking more, throwing them toward us and making that awful noise. It was almost dark and we had to get out of there,' he recounted.
"The two men fled down the mountain, and Mart'nez said every time the creature roared the noise continued reverberating through the entire area. 'I felt like at any moment something was going to grab me from behind all the way out of there.'
"They arrived on foot in Costilla well after dark, deciding no matter how scared they felt, it was necessary to return to the canyon, change the blown tire and bring Mart'nez’s vehicle back. The two men returned to where the vehicle was parked, and by the time they changed the spare it was after 2 a.m. on Sept. 28.
"'We decided to stay until daylight and try to find out what it really was we had experienced,' Mart'nez continued, 'It was deathly quiet the whole time, nothing moving, no elk bugling, not a sound at all. At sunrise, we checked around, found more aspens broken the same way. Nothing else happened to us. There was no sign of anything out of the ordinary except more broken trees.'
"Not finding any other evidence of their frightening experience of the afternoon before, Mart'nez and his friend returned home. 'Like I said, I know what I saw. I know it is not a bear or any other of the wildlife I have seen around here all my life. I decided to tell my story because America, wake up, these creatures exist,' he said. 'Every time I go into the mountains anywhere from now on I will have a camera and an audio recorder with me. I have had other people tell me that even though they wish to remain anonymous, they have had similar experiences over the years, but don’t say much because they get ridiculed. I know what I saw and heard.'"

Todd Standing Bigfoot Video Shown 1-19-2007

This is not new news, the film has been a round a while (see Cryptomundo ). But this does outline that the film is still be shown and moving around. More show times / locations can be found at Sylvanic.

Does Bigfoot exist? Meet the man who says he’s got the proof
John B. SpigottFriday January 19, 2007

From the Lloydminster Meridian Booster

If Edmonton native Todd Standing is right, the elusive Bigfoot may be elusive no more.Standing will be hosting a documentary showing tonight at the Vic Juba Community Theatre about the legendary creature, and says he not only knows where Bigfoot lives, but has also seen one.

“I’m showing the third video, a video which hasn’t been publicly released yet,” said Standing. “It’s going to be the most definitive piece of Bigfoot evidence ever.”Standing said he had a kineticist – an expert on motion related to body movement – do an analysis on the footage and was told by the kineticist that the fastest man in the world could not do it in 24 seconds, while the bipedal animal on film did it in 17 seconds. “There are no special effects done to the tape,” said Standing. “If no human being could have done it … what did it? I’m not saying believe me, but all I want is to get a CNN or a NBC type media to come with me, and I’ll prove to everyone.”

“You know what? I probably wouldn’t believe me. But give me an opportunity, and I’ll go out and I’ll prove it.”

A close friend of Standing’s had a run-in with Bigfoot in the region known as Sylvanic, which got Standing interested in the possibility of delving into the Bigfoot myth for himself. All Standing will reveal about the location of Sylvanic is that it is in the North American Rocky Mountains.

Standing embarked on several expeditions to Sylvanic beginning in 2005 in search of Bigfoot, and says after three expeditions he still didn’t believe that Bigfoot definitively existed. It wasn’t until he saw the nocturnal behaviour of an unidentified animal that he started to change from skeptic to believer.“It was what I saw at night … no animal could have done the things we witnessed,” said Standing.

“It wasn’t a ghost out there either – it was flesh and blood. There’s something out there no one knows about.”Standing says he became a believer when he heard an animal traverse 200 metres of dense bush and climb a 50 foot rock face straight up.

“When I heard that in 40 seconds, I became a believer,” said Standing. “I couldn’t deny what I heard.”Although Standing says he could easily go public with the information he has now and show people exactly what it takes to capture these animals, he wants to make sure the animals are protected from people who might hunt them for sport.

“They evade people as a community,” said Standing. “I believe they have a special sensory perception, but I can’t prove that yet. All I know is they triangulate themselves in an area of the mountains wherever they feel comfortable and when people come, they have daywatchers, so they just back away.”Death threats, angry letters and furious people all come with the territory for a man who is trying to prove what some say simply cannot exist.“Some people are just ignorant and rude about things,” said Standing.

“But for the most part, I get tremendous support from the people and places I go to.”Standing said his next video will focus on obtaining physical evidence of Bigfoot, something he doesn’t foresee as being a big problem.“The only reason we were unable to get physical evidence last time is because it was raining 90 per cent of the time,” said Standing.

“When you’re looking for hair samples in the muck and the rain, it’s just not going to happen. But we came back with the video samples, which are very conclusive, and we want to carry on with our research and in the spring do another expedition.”The documentary shows at 7 p.m., 8 p.m., and 9 p.m. tonight at the Vic Juba, and all proceeds for the non-profit event will be donated to the Lloydminster SPCA.
