Deepest-Known Fishes
Cuvier's "rash dictum" had a twin in marine biology. "In 1843, the British naturalist Edward Forbes declared life was impossible below 300 fathoms (540 metres)." (source) Now, the deepest-living fishes (so far) have been photographed by biologists, and it turns out they're a rather social species. (News source.)
