Missouri Wolves?
A Missouri hunter believes he saw two timber wolves in Saline County. (News source.)
"Daughtry was bow hunting on land owned by Saline County farmer Velma Bacon near the intersection of county roads 206 and 215 when he saw the pair of animals trot past." ...
"Daughtry said the animals' fur was greyish in color and guessed they were tall enough to reach nearly to his hip."
"He hasn't seen the animals since, but he thinks they may have a litter of young because he has heard yips and whining sounds that pups might make.
"Saline County Conservation Agent Tom Davidson said he had received a report on the sighting but had not yet visited the site.
"He noted that the presence of wolves in Missouri is exceedingly rare -- reports of wolf sightings are much less frequent even than reports of mountain lion sightings.
"He said there was one report of a wolf sighting further west of Bacon's property late in the spring, but investigation of the sight did not yield conclusive evidence. Tracks there did not appear to be big enough to be made by wolves, he said.
"The only definite case of a wolf in Missouri recently that Davidson could remember was from several years back when someone in Grundy County shot what they thought was a coyote and it turned out to be a radio-tagged wolf from a northern state that had wandered south."

while hunting 11/07 in Northeast Clinton county, Missouri. I believe I saw a wolf - very close and had the pleasure of viewing him for several minutes. Sure looked like pics I have seen. The most unusual aspect was his departure - it was a gallop rather ten a trot or run like a dog. Anyone know if a wolf gallops?

I have always been fascinated with wolves - and always engulfed in learning about them - reading, viewing videos, observing them at our local zoo etc....in 2005 we moved from the west coast to rural SW MO. Our ranch here consists of 60 acres, surrounded by forests/woodlands. Shortly after our move, while I was out on our land, I noticed what I thought was a coyote, carefully watching and studying me from a short distance away. As it noticed me coming closer to where it was at, it them rose from the grass and galloped off into the woods - up-right and not at all like the movement of a coyote. Just as it rose, I also noticed it's body structure - long legs, solid body structure held more up-right. It's coat color was a fairly rich reddish brown, with darker peppering hairs (the time of year was early Fall...) My conclusion based on the way the animal moved as well as it's body structure, and coat appearance was that this curious animal was indeed a red wolf. The weeks following my sighting, I asked the locals opinion on wolves in this area. Their response was universal = many red wolf sightings, and this occurance is well known amongst the locals here. I then viewed the (on-line) MO wildlife gov. pages and found no mention of this information. Possibly sightings have not been reported...? - Mel
I have just moved to Missouri and am looking for some info about a possible wolf near our home. My wife and I have spotted the animal several times going thru our fence. After the first sighting we could not decide what we saw. The second time it was stalking our ponies behind our barn, the third time it was "galloping" across our upper pasture. Today while mowing our pasture I found two front legs of a small deer, fresh and laying side by side as if placed there on perpose. Our dog, who is penned up when not with me will not approch the area. Our horses and calf seem not to be aware of anything strange. My wife and I had been jokingly calling this thing our "Monster", but now it's not funny. any ideas of what this thing could be.
Sam -- it's difficult to make any suggestions without having seen the animal; should you get a chance to photograph it, feel free to send a pic to me. Problem nowadays is that it could always be a wolf hybrid that someone has released, etc.
